Purpose
The mission of the Hannon Library is to “support the research and curricular needs of students and faculty.” The Library welcomes everyone in the community to use and enjoy its facilities and services. To protect each individual’s access to information and library services, the library has established the following rules of behavior:
Policy
The following are prohibited:
- Failure to follow Computing Resources Acceptable Use Policy.
- Behavior that compromises personal safety, is disruptive,
or impinges on the use of the library by other patrons. This
includes, but is not limited to:
- Bringing animals, except for service animals, inside the library building.
- Begging or soliciting.
- Using loud, obscene, or abusive language to patrons or staff.
- Using cell phones in a manner that disturbs others.
- Eating, except in designated areas.
- Using liquid containers that don’t have a lid.
- Creating a mess.
- Snoring.
- Interfering with the free passage of Library staff or patrons.
- Failure to wear shirt or shoes.
- Engaging in an unsafe activity or a behavior that materially interferes with other’s use of the library, or with the ability of staff to perform their job duties. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Using skateboards, rollerblades, rollerskates, or other sports equipment in the library or on library property.
- Committing or attempting to commit any activity that would constitute
a violation of any federal, state, or local criminal statute or ordinance.
This includes, but is not limited to:
- Smoking, drinking alcohol, or use of any illegal substance inside the Library.
- Possessing a weapon.
- Engaging in unlawful sexual conduct, such as public indecency or offensive touching.
- Destroying, damaging, or defacing library property.
Enforcement
Library staff and librarians will implement these rules. Unlawful activities will be reported to campus security immediately. People who violate rules will be asked to stop such actions. If the behavior continues, they will be directed to leave the library for the day. Refusal to leave when properly directed may result in arrest for trespassing. Subsequent offenses will result in the individual being barred from the Library.
This policy cannot begin to cover all behavior that is "disruptive or impinges on the use of the library by other patrons." In these matters, what is determined to be "disruptive" or "impinges on the use" will be at the discretion of library staff and librarians.
Approved by the Library Faculty on 3/15/2006.
