Foreign language class research projects may call for finding sources about any topic in the language under study. Other assignments call for finding materials about a topic related to the language, as in literature or linguistics, with the option to find articles in several languages.
The SOU Hannon Library is the central place to begin research, to learn and practice using library catalogs, article databases, and the Internet to find out what is available on your topic. Part of the process involves how to refine or redefine your topic, how to evaluate information, and how to obtain the books, articles, or other information you need in time to complete your paper, project, or other assignment. You don't have to go it alone:
- Seek your instructor's advice about your topic and sources: SOU Foreign Languages Department
- Seek your library specialist's advice about the research process and finding appropriate resources (appointments are encouraged for in-depth work on your topic and research strategies): Kate Cleland-Sipfle -SOU Liaison for Foreign Languages
- Ask the person at the Reference Desk for help in using library catalogs, article databases, the Internet, or InterLibrary Loan whenever you are in the Hannon Library during Reference Hours
- Never feel embarrassed to ask for help
or advice; you are here to learn, and department and library faculty are
here to teach
Library Catalogs: For Books, Videos/DVD's and Other Library Materials
Southern Oregon University Library Catalog - use for finding materials owned by SOU; search for titles of books, videos, DVD's, and other materials; you will not find journal articles but you can search for journal titles and holdings; use the article databases below to start searching for articles
Summit: Orbis Cascade Alliance Catalog - check for materials not found at SOU; there is no charge for SUMMIT borrowing for persons enrolled in courses at SOU; allow 3-7 days for obtaining materials ordered through SUMMIT, and check the status of your orders through Your Account (this is the only way to find out when your SUMMIT materials are available for you to pick up at SOU Hannon Library Circulation)
WorldCat - use for finding books not available to you through SOU or SUMMIT online catalogs. Use the request link for books not available through SOU or SUMMIT.
Library Catalogs: Finding Books and Other Materials - the bottom link leads to the most libraries; you will not be able to borrow from any libraries outside SUMMIT directly through SOU; borrow books not held by SOU or SUMMIT libraries through InterLibrary Loan
Databases for Finding Journal Articles and Current Information - From General to Specific
The databases below are organized from the more general to the more specific in content, with language of articles indicated. There is no SUMMIT borrowing of journals. InterLibrary Loan will be your only source of journal articles not available through SOU print journals, full-text databases, or directly from the Internet. Expect to need articles through InterLibrary Loan articles, and plan the timing of your research accordingly. InterLibrary Loan can take anywhere from several days to several weeks.
