Hannon Library Catalog - for books, videos, maps, other media -
Use Keyword searches to start; these should lead to good subject headings; click on subject headings for a list of related subject headings; then select and click on a heading for a list of books for which that heading is used. The Search SUMMIT button carries your screen content (book record or list of headings) into SUMMIT for more searching.
SUMMIT Catalog - for books (and possibly maps)
Use Keyword searches to start; these should lead to good subject headings; click on subject headings for a list of related subject headings; then select and click on a heading for a list of books for which that heading is used. Check the holding libraries to be certain that a work is not available at SOU before ordering. There is no charge for SUMMIT borrowing for students at SOU.
Article Databases - for articles in journals, articles in books (edited volumes), book reviews
-
MLA International Bibliography - for citations and some full text articles in scholarly journals. Also contains book reviews. Has links for List of Journals at SOU for journals and Hannon Library Catalog for books that contain articles, and links to InterLibrary Loan for materials not owned by SOU. This is the main database for students in languages, literature, and linguistics. Dissertations may appear; these are very hard to find. May be limited to materials written in Spanish.
-
Academic Search Complete - for citations and some full text articles in scholarly and popular journals. Limit to "Peer Reviewed" for scholarly journals. This is a general purpose database that does not cover any subject in great depth. In English. Has links to List of Journals at SOU for some articles. Has Interlibrary Loan link for journals not held by SOU.
-
Arts and Humanities Search - for citations only to articles and reviews in scholarly journals in the humanities. Shows holdings for SOU (check the Catalog to be sure the issue is here), and has Interlibrary Loan links; use these only for journals not available at SOU. Also search List of Journals at SOU to be sure. Search "non-English" to find Spanish and other foreign language articles.
- Hispanic American Periodicals Index (HAPI) - for brief citations only to articles and reviews in scholarly journals from the Americas. There are many articles in Spanish. There are no links to the List of Journals at SOU in HAPI. Check this source before ordering an article through the Interlibrary Loan Form for Articles. For essays in books, check the Hannon Library Catalog (above), then, if not available here, SUMMIT (above), then, if not available, check WorldCat for the book title and use the Interlibrary Loan link in the record.
-
Clase and Periodica - for scholarly articles from Latin America, mostly in Spanish. Same interface as Arts and Humanities Search.
- Fuente Academica - for citations and some full-text articles. Interface is same as for Academic Search Complete. Mostly Spanish. Has, for example, full text of articles from the journal Linguistica Española Actual
