How to Find Tests and Measures

READ THE INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPHS SO THE RESOURCES LISTED MAKE SENSE TO YOU!

There are typically two kinds of tests/measures and they are referred to as Published Tests or Unpublished Tests, and those terms can be misleading.

Published tests are those sold by commercial publishers. SOU Library does not maintain a library of published tests. You may need to purchase from the publisher unless available elsewhere on campus.

Unpublished (or noncommerical) tests are those found primarily in journals but also in ERIC documents, books, or directly from the author. Even if these are not commercially available for purchase, they may be copyrighted. The American Psychological Association (APA) cautions all users of unpublished tests to be aware of ethical considerations. APA states that the researcher must contact the author for permission if the test is copyrighted and obtain that permission in writing. "The fact that a scale can be readily obtained does not mean that researchers have permission to use it." (Beere, Gender Roles, 1990, p. 12).

The resources listed here are arranged in several catagories. Most will help you locate information about tests either by a general subject area, the title of the test, or the author of the test; and where you may be able to get the actual instrument. Some resources will actually have instruments reproduced in full. Unless you are familiar with some of these resources, you will probably need to ask a reference librarian to assist you, so don't hesitate to ask for help.

The book titles are linked only to the Hannon Library Catalog, where you can check on the availabilty of that title--it does not mean the book itself is available online.

    TESTS IN JOURNALS

Journal articles can identify both relevant published and unpublished tests; they are excellent sources for very current unpublished tests or for discovering revisions of existing instruments. If you are lucky, you may find the unpublished test in its entirety. Utilize appropriate electronic databases when searching for a test in the journal literature. Use relevant synonyms when searching for a test by topic, i.e., test(s), scale(s), questionnaire(s), survey(s), measure(s), measurement(s), inventory, etc. Search by specific test name and acronym if applicable.

PsycINFO (links to the PsycINFO database - restricted to SOU use only)

Use appropriate descriptors in conjunction with the classification code (cc=2221-2229). Again, not fool-proof. Descriptors may be more useful than the code(s). The EBSCO version of PsycINFO gives you the option of limiting your search to Assessment Instruments in the Special Features drop-down menu.

ERIC (links to the ERIC database - restricted to SOU use only)

For best results in locating an entire test, use the Advanced Search option in EBSCO's ERIC and limit your search term to Pub. Type: Tests/Evaluation Instruments. Not fool-proof but extremely helpful. The abstract will usually indicate whether the instrument(s)/survey questions/etc. are included.
