These tools differ dramatically from the search directories of search tools in that they are maintained by individuals or groups of individuals--in many cases professional librarians--who select resources linking to "good information."
INFOMINE is a collection of scholarly internet resources including databases, electronic journals, electronic books, bulletin boards, listservs, online library card catalogs, articles, and directories of researchers.
A site that focuses on Internet resources that are primarily academic or directed toward college audiences. Academic Info is organized by subject with annotated listings. You can browse using the Browse by Subject or Search by Keyword.
The collection at this site from the O'Keefe Library, St. Ambrose University is substantial and well worth using. The new interface has made navigation significantly easier to use. Some of the featured headings such as "Hot Paper Topics" and "Important Sites by Major" are well chosen and can provide excellent web sites for research and more.
The Internet Public Library, (IPL), is a public service organization at the University of Michigan School of Information which serves to organize, select, and evaluate information resource on the Internet. The IPL offers access to a variety of resources that can be accessed via the "Search this Site" feature or by browsing subject headings.

The Librarians' Index to the Internet is an annotated subject guide to resources selected and evaluated by librarians. The index is intended for both librarians and non-librarians.
The Scout Report Archives is a database of selected Internet sites and mailing lists that can be searched by keyword or browse by A-Z Library of Congress subject headings. An Advanced Search is also available for searching multiple fields such as Title, Author, Subject, etc. Sites are recommended by a team of subject experts who select and annotate each resource. Well worth the time to search here.
An extensive list of resources maintained by Gary Price of George Washington University that are not easily accessible by the major search tools. The quantity of resources makes the site difficult to use and navigate at first. However, the quality of sites makes it well worth the effort. From Ready Reference, U.S and International Government, U.S. State and City Government, and Legal Research to subject resources in Humanities, and Social Sciences, the resources at this site are substantial.
The Digital Librarian is a resource guide to Internet sites organized by subject. This site contains a wide variety of information and is well-organized and easy to use.
About.com, formarly the Mining Co., is a subject guide to sites about a variety of topics. The guide can be searched either with the directory, by topic, or by using the About A-Z link to browse sites alphabetically.
World Wide Web Virtual Library
The World Wide Web (WWW) Virtual Library is the oldest subject dirctory of the web. It was started by Tim Berners-Lee, the creator of the web itself, and is maintained by individuals around the world who are responsible for the content.
